Those who want to see our backroads closed use the excuse that we "tear up the trail" and "cause soil erosion." Every backroad that exceeds a 10% grade gets closed under this pretense.
If we love to 4x4, we should understand that we drive on dirt, and misplacing a little bit doesn't hurt anything. It never has, and it never will. Some of our roads have been around for over 100 years. Mixing up a little soil while fording a river doesn't hurt anything. Moving rocks doesn't hurt anything. Driving 300 feet off of the trail to make camp doesn't hurt anything. Making a new fire pit doesn't hurt anything.
Our trails get washed out, and we fix them. Rocks fall, and we bust them up with jackhammers. Trees fall, and we cut them up with chain saws. Fences get cut, and we wire them back up. People leave trash, and we haul it out.
All I'm saying is don't be a softie. We need to stand up for our 4x4 family and our Arizona backroads. We cannot start demonizing our own community members for something inevitable while traveling a dirt road. All the while falling in line with an environmentalist agenda.
