The amazing trails we lose.

I have been completing a project to map roads inside wilderness areas. It's astonishing how many roads are locked up inside wilderness areas. Through my research, I have found hundreds of miles of roads and several other man-made structures. All of these things make the wilderness designation null a void under the law.

The Mazatzal Wilderness is the greatest example in Arizona. It contains multiple old jeep trails and mines that still show on satellite imagery. In fact, the Mazatzal portion of the Arizona trail is an old Jeep trail.

Just look at this incredible trail we lost. πŸ˜’

Kevin, where did you get the information for this article? As both an avid mtbker who enjoys riding the az trail, as well as a 4x4 enthusiast who uses roads that cross the AZT, this article concerns me. I can’t find any info elsewhere online. Any info appreciated.

I am now assuming that the topo maps I've collected when I lived down there are no longer valid.  Is the area north of Tip Top still open?  That was our first off-highway (need to watch wording these days) camping trip (I thinking it is called overlanding today) by 3 novice drivers.  Have since moved from Arizona but always think about that trip and want to make that loop again.  There was a lot of cool mining equipment from back in the day there.

@yelltj That whole area behind Tip Top is closed now. The mine is reopened and active. There are rumors that someone was shooting cattle too. Not sure if it's true, though.

@yelltj  We tried to get up to Tip Top last February, but the road was barricaded and there was a sign about cattle rustling. It was my first time back in there, and I don't know the area well, but we stopped at a few stone/concrete foundations. I think they used to be mining offices; just above the ruins, a steep climb takes you to a headframe with great views of the narrow valley below. I'm 99% certain this was not Tip Top, but I don't know what mine that headframe sits on.

It's been so long since I've been out there. There is another old town out there that you can visit if you contact the owner first.

No problem. I'm actually working to fix that this week.
