Changing out large off-road tires can be a serious hassle if you don’t have the right method. These tires are heavy, awkward, and not easy to line up with the hub — especially in off-road or remote conditions. But there’s a safe, simple way to install off-road tires using only your body weight and positioning. It’s called the toe-lift technique, and it works even if you’re working solo in the garage or on a trail.
Most off-roaders know the frustration of trying to mount a 35″ or 37″ tire by hand. The weight alone can be difficult to manage, and lining up the bolt holes or studs often becomes a time-consuming process. Without the right tools or a second set of hands, it’s easy to risk injury or improper installation.
The toe-lift method for off-road tires solves this problem by using the leverage of your feet and legs to lift and position the tire precisely — no need for brute strength or complicated tools.
To start, make sure your vehicle is safely supported with jack stands and parked on stable, level ground. Only lift the vehicle high enough to get the old tire off — ideally no more than 1–2 inches of clearance between the new tire and the ground. This makes tire alignment much easier.
Next, sit on the ground in front of the wheel hub and place the new tire between your legs. Slide your feet under the tire with your heels planted on the ground and your toes under the tire’s lower edge.
Now, use your feet to lift the tire by rotating your toes upward, using your heels as a pivot point. This controlled motion raises the tire with minimal effort and puts it close to the height of the hub.
With the tire lifted, use your feet to rotate or “walk” the tire slightly left or right until it aligns with the wheel studs or bolt holes. One foot can shift the tire while the other stabilizes it. Your hands are free to guide the tire into place and press it onto the hub securely.
This technique works anywhere — in your garage, driveway, or out on a trail. Because you’re seated and using your legs, you lower your center of gravity, reduce strain on your back, and stay safer throughout the process.
Even better, this off-road tire installation method is accessible to just about anyone. It’s a valuable skill for solo travelers, overlanders, or anyone who may need to change a flat tire in remote areas.

The toe-lift technique is one of the most effective ways to install heavy off-road tires without risking injury or wasting time. It’s a practical skill that every off-roader, overlander, or trail explorer should know — especially when you’re far from help and need to get rolling again fast.
Whether you’re swapping tires in your driveway or performing emergency repairs in the backcountry, this method provides a simple, safe, and repeatable solution for mounting big tires.
